YMCA NEWCOMER YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The YMCA’s Newcomer Youth Leadership Development Program has been providing leadership training to Newcomer youth in Toronto for ten years. Thousands of youth have benefited from this free program and the YMCA has made special accommodations to the program to ensure that the newly arrived refugee youth feel welcomed into the program. The NYLD program runs through the generous financial contributions of the federal Government’s Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
The program runs weekly at six locations throughout the GTA, and my role as the Newcomer Youth Specialist is to facilitate the participation and integration of Arabic-speaking youth into the program. I, myself, am a Syrian newcomer and a native Arabic speaker, and in the last year, I have been involved with the Syrian newcomers arriving to Canada, helping them integrate and adapt to their new home. It is our goal to help the Syrian youth have a strong start in Canada that will set the way for them to grow and succeed in their new home. I hope that by working with you, we are able to enrich our program and make it reach out to as many people as possible.
